VFW Location of
Slots Raid
The Veterans of Foreign Wars post was the location
of a raid last Wednesday, with one person being arrested at the
scene. The VFW was the location of illegal slots being operated, and
Benny C. Phillips, 63, of Riesel was arrested in conjunction with
the illegal slots.
Deputies say that there will be other arrests as well, but Phillips
was the first one. They declined to say what his connection with
them was, but he was arrested. The VFW was just one location of
several that were raided for illegal slots across the county – as
McLennan County Sheriff’s department tried to put a halt to some of
the illegal slots being operated in the county.
Post Commander Kenneth Kimball was out of town at the time of the
raid, and Phillips is their quartermaster. According to the
sheriff’s department, four illegal slots were seized and taken with
them. They also raided four other businesses that evening, taking a
total of 162 illegal slots with them.
Phillips was released on $2,000 bond pending a hearing, and is
charged with promotion of gambling activities. Initial counts had
the illegal slots revenues at somewhere around $30,000 give or take,
and the sheriff’s office declined to say if there was some sort of
connection between the locations as they were all raided at the same
time.
