O’Malley Considering
Special Session
Governor Martin O’Malley says that due to the
shortfall in the state’s budget, he may call a special session to
deal with it. There are many unresolved issues that are at hand,
including whether or not to legalize slots to make up for the budget
shortfall. Legislators are not pleased at the thought of it, but
O’Malley says it may be necessary.
O’Malley has not made the recall official yet, but has said that
something needs to happen to fix the $1.5 billion shortfall that
they have. He says that they need to debate taxes, spending, and the
slots. He has been working with Democratic leaders of the General
Assembly, and now feels that it may be time to bring everyone back.
He said that by bringing people back to talk about slots, etc. ,
some real progress could be made since everyone will be single
minded about the topic at hand. He says that everyone wants to
discuss certain topics while avoiding others, and that this would
make them come to agreement on those specific topics that need to be
handled, such as slots and tax increases.
He says that a combination of legalizing slots, spending less and
increasing taxes will solve the budget problem. He says he plans on
telling people his plan in the next couple of weeks whether the
House and the Senate approve or not. He says that although it has
been hard to come to a “consensus” on slots, the other things they
have not tried yet. Up until now O’Malley has been somewhat reticent
to support the slots, but because of the budget issues it has become
necessary.
