Political Firings?
As if Governor Martin O’Malley didn’t have enough
problems, now he has to contend with disgruntled employees who have
been fired. O’Malley is in the middle of trying to get slots
legalized in the state to make up for the budget deficit, while
under attack for allegedly firing employees because they are white,
male and Republican.
Nelson Reichart has brought suit against O’Malley claiming that was
the only reason he was fired – and that O’Malley is trying to
install a “Democratic machine” which will let him do whatever he
wants. With all Democrats at the helm it would be much easier to get
his slots and other agenda’s prioritized and pushed through.
Reichart says that he should not be fired due to his political
status, only if he was not doing what he should have been doing –
his job. Reichert was fired the day after he was quoted in The Sun
regarding a politically sensitive land purchase.
O’Malley says that the thought of him firing someone so that he
could get slots legalized is ridiculous. He said that the claim was
“groundless” and that they would only fire someone if they were not
“the best person to do this job.” He continued on to speak about the
special session they might be doing to legalize slots and possibly
adding a higher income tax for the wealthy. He says that his main
concern right now is finding a solution for the shortfall in the
budget.
