Slots for Education
As states struggle to find the ways to fit
everything they want and need into shrinking budgets, more and more
of them are looking to legalize slots so that they can bring in
additional revenue and hopefully fill in some gaps along the way.
New Hampshire is one of those states looking for some additional
revenue, and they are also considering bringing in slots.
They have a major shortage and without additional revenue, they will
drastically have to cut education funding, so if they add the slots
into the state coffers, they could have enough for education as well
as other programs that they would like to implement. They don’t want
to raise taxes, and residents don’t want that either, so they are
desperate for a new funding source.
The House Ways and Means Committee is spending the next few months
going over the plans for adding gambling and seeing if it is even
feasible to add slots to the state as a kind of state-regulated
gambling option. They have already spoken with and looked into how
it works in other states to see if it is right for them.
They are planning on giving a report to the state by November that
will give their recommendation for or against adding slots or any
other kind of gambling to the state. Once that is determined, if it
is a yes vote, then they will need to find out exactly how much
money is needed for education and plan the gambling expansion
accordingly.
