Wonderland Looking
to Trade Dogs for Slots
Revere’s Wonderland has made it perfectly clear
that they are not necessarily interested in continuing to be a
racing franchise. They announced yesterday that they would be
willing to remove all dog racing from the premises if they are
approved for slots. The racetrack has been trying to get a license
to build a slots complex or casino, and this may be the best way for
them to get that wish.
Management says that they have been considering this move for
several years, but with a new ballot coming up next fall they might
want to put their focus on the slots instead of the dogs. They are
also looking at anti-dog racing activists fighting that referendum
in an attempt to shut down the track.
Many believe that if the track is slots only, and they remove the
dog racing from the agenda, that they will get the support of the
opposition just so that the dogs won’t race any longer. It ends up
being a win-win for both parties, as the dogs won’t race and the
track will get slots.
They also know that they came very close to having dog racing banned
in the 2000 election, and they need to have another plan in place
should it pass. Experts say that this is a good way for the track to
stay in business, because if dog racing is banned they will be out
of work. But if they have slots, they will be able to continue to
stay open. The slots are the real money maker anyway, not the races.
With most Massachusetts voters against dog racing, getting approval
to bring in slots would be the best thing that could happen to the
track.
