Slots Gambling
Problems Abound
Many people are very happy with the recent
announcement from the President and Prime Minister that they are
against slots and gambling. They say that slots have become one of
the social ills of their society, and they must do something about
getting rid of the machines if they are to survive as a whole
country. Slots are bringing gambling addiction in that threatens to
destroy many residents’ way of life.
The President has recently said that he is seriously considering
legislation that would enforce an immediate ban on slots. The Prime
Minister has also come forward saying that slots and gambling are a
“serious social ill” and the industry should be closed down
completely. Both of these statements have met with protests from the
slots and casino industry, as they say that not only does it bring
in money for the environment, but it also employs more than 7,000
people.
The casino industry is asking for regulation instead of closure, if
for no other reason than the fact that they will put so many people
out of business if they close it down. They also point out that the
government has been very unclear over the years as to their policy
on slots and gambling. They support and subsidize horse racing,
imported roulette wheels and slots and took taxes from them, and
sponsored the National Lottery Board.
The lottery board brought in all kinds of electronic games which led
to the largest group of problem gamblers today. Opponents of
gambling say that they should not single out the slots, for they are
not the only problem within their country. Instead of simply banning
slots, they should ban horse racing, blackjack, lottery, etc.
