Prohibition Failed
Once Before
In a recent editorial in one of the newspapers, I
noticed an article comparing the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act to Prohibition. It got me thinking about playing
online slots and how things have changed since the bill passed one
year ago this month. And I have to admit, I think they are right.
The UIGEA is simply that – it is prohibition only in a different
package. Just as the government once tried to stop the flow of
alcohol in the country and failed, trying to stop online slots and
gambling will fail as well – and it has. People are still playing
online slots and gambling, the only thing that has changed is that
it is not as safe as it once was.
The government says that they are trying to protect the American
people, but all they have done by trying to limit their personal
freedoms is put them in more danger than they were before. The
article brought up the idea of legislating morality. Any time one
person tries to tell another what to do based on their moral beliefs
you are asking for trouble, but for the government to do it is just
asking to be laughed at.
Regulating the online slots and casinos might work for some, but
there will still be unregulated sites out there, and the vast
majority of people aren’t going to know the difference. There are
tons of sites that pulled from the US when the UIGEA was passed –
these are the sites that will get regulated. However, there are just
as many that did not pull out of the market, and these are the ones
that won’t get regulated. It really is that simple.
