Slots Have No
Political Preference
It does not matter whether or not there are
Democrats or Republicans in the office; everyone is still talking
about slots. Opponents of the machines want to make it perfectly
clear, that it does not matter to them who is pushing the slots
through, they are going to work to keep them out no matter what.
When the Republicans pushed it in the form of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich
Jr. they opposed it; and they say that now that Democratic Gov.
Martin O’Malley is looking to bring them in they will still keep
working to oppose them. They say that as state lawmakers take
another look at possibly using slots to fix the shortage in the
budget, they will be gearing up to oppose them once again.
St. Paul Community Baptist Church in Baltimore is one of those
pushing against the slots. Rev. Gregory Perkins said at last night’s
rally that they will “aggressively resist any effort” by the
government to bring in slots. They say that it is a “menace to
society” and can and will not be tolerated.
They say that with the legislature primarily Democratic that it will
be harder to fight against the slots than it was when things were
different, but they will continue to fight. They say that they are
weaker than they have been in previous years, but that does not mean
that they won’t fight.
