Guam Still Trying
for Slots
Guam’s only dog racing track has been trying for
years to get slots approved so that they can expand gambling.
However, they have been successfully fought off by various groups
who don’t want to see slots legalized in their country. This has not
stopped the group however.
With the death of Senator Antonio Unpingco, the state Legislature
voted to hold a special election to fill his seat on December 15th.
However, slots proponents are attempting to use this opportunity to
get slots on the ballot again. The Guam Election Commission voted to
keep slots off of the ballot saying that this was not what the
election was meant for.
However, proponents are now saying that the Election Commission is
making decisions for the people of Guam. They say that the people
want the slots and the fact that Guam’s government doesn’t only
tells you that they are stifling the needs of the many to make the
few happy. They say that they are telling Guam’s voters that they
cannot make good decisions so they will make their decisions for
them.
However, the people of Guam have already spoken out against slots in
their country, and have voted to not allow them in. Proponents of
the slots are now asking the Supreme Court to step in to allow them
on the ballot, and the Commission’s law firm has filed a motion
asking the Court to reject the request.
