Passamaquoddy Defeat
will Help Penobscots
With the defeat of the Passamaquoddy tribe’s
racing initiative; the Penobscot Indian Nation says that they can
use it as a learning tool for their own attempt to get their bill
passed. They say that they are now aware of how to run their
“campaign” to get the bill passed as they were not aware of how the
competition worked.
They say that they have to do a better job of getting out there and
stating their case, as the “no’s” really get out there and vote.
They are attempting to get a bill passed that would allow them to
bring in 400 slots at Indian Island’s high stakes bingo hall.
They had submitted the bill last legislative session, but it was
carried over to the current one. If they are approved for the slots,
they would be subject to regulation by the Gambling Control Board,
something the tribe has zero problems with. They would also pay the
state 1% of their gross slot income and retain the rest.
They say that polls showed that there were a lot of people in favor
of the Passamaquoddy measure, but they just didn’t get out there to
vote. Now they know that they have to or they just won’t get the
bill passed. It didn’t help that it wasn’t a major election either,
as many just didn’t feel passionately enough about it to get out
there and vote. Whereas those that were opposed did have that
passion and came out in droves to defeat it.
