Baptists Oppose
Slots in Miami
Just as voters are placing their early voting
ballots at their polls and absentee voters are putting them in the
mail, the Miami Baptist Association’s Administrative Committee voted
unanimously on January 15th to vote against the slots that they are
all deciding upon. With Broward County set to rake in millions upon
millions of dollars from their own slots expansion, many in
Miami-Dade county feel that they deserve a piece of that pie.
However, the proponents of the slots issue are about to have a
battle on their hands. The Baptists are urging Southern Baptists to
vote against the slots expansion in their county, and want them to
spread the word. They say that slots are not “appropriate for
[their] communities” and want people to realize the ramifications of
voting them in.
The resolution, drafted by Gary Johnson, that the Baptists have
passed, has been mailed to all of their churches – and thus to more
than 50,000 of their congregations. As the Miami Baptists are the
largest evangelical group in the county, they know that they stand a
real chance of beating the slots once they have all cast their
votes.
The resolution is called “Vote No to the Expansion of Gambling in
Miami-Dade County” and urges their flock to think “biblically” when
voting in regards to the slots. They say that it is harmful to their
community and will create addicts in its wake. They also stress that
the amount of other harms that will befall their community in
relation to bringing in slots are more than enough reason to vote
against the slots.
