Survey Shows
Internet Addiction
A recent survey has shown that as a country we log
in more hours online than was previously estimated. Between email,
surfing and playing games, not to mention online slots and gambling,
we have become a nation addicted to the internet.
The survey reports that the number of people participating in
non-gambling activities has rapidly grown; and those participating
in online slots and gambling activities has grown instead of
decreasing despite the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
They say that logging on has become more habit than need at this
point.
Some say that email is much like the online slots. They push the
button and see if they have any mail, just as they would if they
were playing the slots to see if they had won any money. Those with
a propensity toward online slots and gambling say that the thrill is
very similar to playing the games, and that they get a familiar rush
when they have email.
We have become so addicted that the American Medical Association is
considering a proposal to make “Internet Addiction” an official
disorder. They say that they have so many people exhibiting the
classic symptoms that they have to do something about it. They are
planning on reviewing the information later this year.
