No More Online Slots
for Second Life
“Second Life” was meant as a place that real
people could go to that could not be touched by reality. This
virtual world was Wiccan in many ways in that “if it harms none, do
what ye will.” However, it seems that even in virtual worlds, the
government and reality will still find a way in.
That having been said, there will be no more online gambling for
Second Life – as online slots, blackjack, poker, roulette, poker,
etc. will all be banned effective immediately. The idea was that
people could play these games as well as create internet businesses,
etc. and have a new forum in which to do so.
But the virtual currency can be exchanged or sold for real money,
thus leaving the government to say that the online slots, etc.
played at Second Life constituted gambling and thus violated the
UIGEA, so it had to be stopped. Linden Lab released a statement
saying that all online casino games such as online slots, etc. would
now be banned – as would anything that involved betting on games
that "rely on chance or random number generation to determine a
winner." They also included sports betting as well.
They said that as long as it was illegal in the US, it would be
illegal there, and they would review the terms of the ban as
industry practices, etc., change. Therefore, if the UIGEA is
reversed, which many believe it will be – you will probably be able
to play your favorite online slots again sometime in the future.
