Wichita Greyhound
Park Closing
Wichita Greyhound Park has been barely holding on
for some time now, and they were hoping that slots would be approved
by voters. However, this was not to be, and now the track is forced
to close down. The track even asked for a recount, but they still
did not get the slots.
They had said that if the slots were not approved that they would
have to close their doors due to a lack of funding, but many said
that they were over-dramatizing the real facts. It looks as though
they were wrong. Phil Ruffin, Jr. who is the director of operations
for the track said that their last day will be October 6th of this
year, and that they will not be holding any more races after that
time.
After the recount he said that the vote on the slots was now done,
and that they would not challenge it further. He also said that
without the slots they were not “economically viable” and they would
be closing. He is hoping to help those that work there find new
positions in other establishments.
They are also looking for homes for the dogs – they said that they
would be paying Race the Wind Greyhound Adoption, Inc. to take care
of the dogs – for without slots they are without homes. They will be
taking care of their needed resources, and they would handle the
adoptions. He said that the “welfare of the greyhounds is a top
priority” for them and the racing commission.
Some of the dogs will go to other tracks, some will go back to their
owners; the rest will go up for adoption. He also said that they are
like a family, and that their employees would be a great asset to
any company who might employ them.
