Dania Jai Alai on
Hold
It has been reported that slot machine revenue has
not quite been what it is supposed to be. In fact, the slot machines
are bringing in significantly less than what was estimated.
Unfortunately for Dania Jai-Alai, that means they need to rethink
their construction that would have been funded by the slot machine
revenue.
Boyd Gaming had shown the plans for expansion last November, but now
those plans have been put on hold. They were planning a $152 million
slot machine casino, which was going to be put on the 47 acres that
they purchased earlier this year. However, instead, they are going
back to the plans to see if they should scale it down a bit – as
slot machines just aren’t performing as well as they thought they
would.
There is even talk of not building a slot machine casino there at
all now, and only time will tell what they intend to do. But as of
right now, the slot machines were supposed to be bringing in an
estimated $212 per slot machine per day. Instead, they are bringing
in somewhere around $85 per day per slot machine, a big difference.
This is a loss of more than $46,000 a year per slot machine.
This has also led to a $45 million deficit that lawmakers now have
to fill with money from somewhere else. The amount of tax that was
expected was $196 million, and instead will be more like $113
million. Boyd Gaming says that they had noticed the disparity
between what was expected of the slot machines and what was really
happening, and had already been considering a new game plan, before
the amounts were announced. The new slot machine casino would have
had 1,500 slot machines, poker tables, restaurants, bars, nightclub
and a jai-alai fronton.
