Casino Workers
Thrilled, Casinos Aren’t
Atlantic City is back in the news again with their
City Council pushing for a complete smoking ban in the casinos. If a
recent measure is approved, smoking would be banned in all eleven AC
slots casinos. They could go to smoking lounges to partake, but they
cannot light up at the slots or tables any longer.
The measure will be up for a final vote in two weeks and if it
passes, they will be looking at smoke free casinos as of October
15th. The city has tried before to ban smoking in all of the slots
casinos, but failed in its last attempt. They were able to get a
partial smoking ban, which many employees heralded as progress.
The employees say that they are being discriminated against and that
smoking should be illegal indoors. They say that the only reason why
the casinos are allowed to have smoking indoors and other businesses
aren’t is because of the slots and the amount of money they bring
in. However, they say that the smoking is killing them.
The casinos say that the city has to allow them smoking or they will
lose 20% of their business. They claim that they will have to lay
people off, and the state would see significantly less revenue.
Employees say that this is a risk they are willing to take.
