Slot Review: Big Break
Have the long
days of winter left you longing for a big break? We’re talking, of
course, about surfing. In these days of cold weather, it can be
tough for those who like to hang ten. Unless you have a really good
wetsuit and a willingness to brave the frigid waves of January and
February, you have to simply shelve your boogie board and find a new
pastime to divert you until the water warms up again. Or, you can
take a few spins with the Big Break online slot game. The concept is
cute enough – a team of perky primates are down to ride the waves.
For us, the slot game was honestly a mixed bag. But we’ll get to
that later.
Big Break is a five-reel, fifteen payline online slot machine title
from Microgaming. We normally associate that online casino software
company with the best games in the business, so this title marks a
very unusual misstep. Coin values start at one cent and range
upwards to fifty cents. You can play this as a penny slot if you are
just screwing around and killing some time, or play the max coins of
one hundred fifty (ten per payline) for the max per-spin wager of
seventy-five dollars. But that’s a bit hard to justify doing, given
that the jackpot is a lone thousand coins or five hundred dollars.
Are you willing to bet over a seventh of the max bet on every spin,
even if the slot game in question pays out generously? That’s
between you and your bankroll. Big Break features a free practice
feature for those who like a little free play, and an Auto Play
option for those who don’t feel like clicking through multiple
spins.
Big Break’s reels appear on the background of a tropical beach, with
white sand in the forefront and mountains in the background. Images
on the reels include lush tropical fruit, and pictures of the band
of monkeys, gorillas, and chimps who are surfing the waves. It’s a
cute enough theme, but the fact remains that graphics are another
major weakness of this online slot title. We’re just used to better
presentation from Microgaming slots, honestly. There are animations
of the monkey crew surfing, as well as some tropical music that
supports the theme well.
The Lucky Break and Big Break symbols are both wild, which means
that they can substitute for any other icon on the reels in a
winning combination, with the exceptions of the scatter symbol and
one another. The Lucky Break wild symbol is a doubler, which means
that you win twice the normal payout when it completes a combo! The
munky symbol (Microgaming’s spelling, not ours!) is the scatter
symbol – get at least two of these lucky guys on any one spin, and
win fifteen free spins. If you get five different characters’ icons
appearing on the reels during a single spin, you will be taken to
the bonus game, which awards a random multiplier.
The gameplay is decent enough in this game, but we wish strongly
that the graphics quality and jackpot were quite a bit stronger.
These elements detracted form our enjoyment of Big Break, and keep
us from giving it a fully enthusiastic recommendation.
