Recession Gives
Online Gambling a Boost
Worldwide online gambling revenues passed the
twenty billion dollar benchmark for the first time in 2008, making a
strong statement about not only the popularity of internet gambling,
but also about the true depth of the global economic crisis. Land
gambling destinations like Las Vegas, Macau, and Dubai have seen
numbers plummet. Meanwhile, online slot parlors and other forms of
casino gambling on the World Wide Web have experienced phenomenal
growth. Global Betting and Gaming Consultants, an international
research firm, has determined that more and more people are turning
to the internet for leisure activities, driven to stay home by not
wanting to spend much money on entertainment.
Gambling on the World Wide Web offers several draws for consumers
living in today’s society. Budget value can’t be beat, of course –
playing the slots at one’s favorite online casino costs none of the
gas and transportation expenses, nor the lodging and dining costs
incurred by taking a trip out to the nearest big casino. Convenience
is another huge factor. You need not leave your home to access the
internet, and the ease and variety of online casino play is never
more than a few click of your mouse away.
Although online gambling is technically illegal in the United States
and several software companies have barred U.S. gamblers from making
bets, Yanks still contribute half of all casino revenue worldwide.
With the anticipated repeal of the UIGEA, this number only stands to
skyrocket. In that case, 2009 will definitely be another banner year
for the world of internet gambling.
