Will Playtech Prove
To Be Crypto’s Kryptonite?
Late last month, fans of comic book superheroes
were electrified to learn that Cryptologic had inked a deal with DC
Comics and Warner Brothers Digital Distribution to bring online
slots based around such DC Comics universe characters as Batman to
internet casinos. Cryptologic is known in the industry as THE name
for superhero slots, thanks to their longstanding deal with Marvel
Entertainment which has led to a wide and ultra-successful line of
slot machine titles based off such marvel luminaries as Captain
America, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Iron Man. Now, a major
software company competitor is trying to steal the jewel in
Cryptologic’s crown, in a battle that could prove to be as epic as
that between Superman and Spiderman!
Playtech, a competing online casino software company doing the
lion’s share of its business in England, has signed a deal with
Marvel that will give them the right to the same characters to which
Cryptologic had heretofore held exclusive rights. Cryptologic’ deal
with Marvel comes up in 2010, while Playtech has just completed a
fresh bargain with the company. No longer are The Incredible Hulk
and The X-Men the sole domain of Cryptologic, and no longer can
players take for granted the assumption that their favorite line of
progressive jackpot superhero slots will still be around past next
year.
It’s unknown how things will play out, but there is some speculation
that Cryptologic could or might be forced to let Playtech “have” the
Marvel characters, while they turn their attention to the DC stable.
