Seniors Flock to
Slot Parlor
At this time of year, Florida residents are prone
to joke that they are living in “God’s waiting room.” Snowbird
season is in full swing – and we’re not talking about creatures with
wings. Senior citizens flock to Florida between the months of
November and March. Now, those folks visiting the very popular Fort
Myers area will have a new and inexpensive way to while away their
days – playing the slot machines at the Lucky Horseshoe gaming room
in the town of Lehigh. The Lucky Horseshoe is the third such
establishment in Lehigh, where gambling for money on slot games is
disallowed anywhere except on Indian reservations.
Instead of playing for quarters and dollars, the Lucky Horseshoe
offers other prizes that, while not cash, are still valuable. You
won’t win a million bucks at this gaming room the way you would
playing a hot progressive title in Atlantic City, but you might just
land a gift card to the Publix supermarket, or such local dining
hotspots as the Bonefish Grill. Wal-Mart gift cards are another hot
commodity. Players load cash onto a card, which they then swipe
through the slot games to start the action.
Obviously, anyone over the age of twenty-one is allowed and welcome
to play at the Lucky Horseshoe, but all indications point to seniors
making up the majority of the clientele. Lured by free hot dogs and
beverages around the clock, denizens report that the Lucky Horseshoe
is a fun and welcoming place. We predict a long and healthy life for
this establishment, which allows folks to enjoy all the fun of
playing the slots in a comfortable and legal environment.
