A New Day for
America
The lyrics to a timeless song originally sung by
Sam Cooke say: “It’s been a long, a long time coming – but a change
is going to come.” Today, for good or for bad, change has come to
the United States in the form of President Barack Obama. Today marks
the end of George W. Bush’s presidential administration, which
wreaked havoc on the face of American gambling. Obama has made
countless promises to reform America in ways that are meaningful to
its citizens – how about the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act? On his website, Obama made a poll asking what reforms people
would like to see. An end to the ridiculous and unfair ban on online
slots and casino gambling was mentioned by thousands of respondents.
Currently, the UIGEA has closed off most avenues of legal (and safe)
online gambling to Americans, with only few sites willing to put
their proverbial necks on the line to keep offering these
attractions to the American public. If the UIGEA is not amended,
there can be no doubt that soon U.S. citizens will be completely
barred from enjoying slots, poker games, and online bingo.
Obama has stated that he would consider reforming the UIGEA,
although obviously the issue of online gambling will be far from a
priority as he tackles the overwhelming issues of a major recession
in the U.S. and the war. Obama was a poker player in college, and we
have heard tell that he was something of a card shark! We can only
hope that our new leader will give the issue of online gambling a
fairer assessment than his predecessor.
