Are There Too Many
Slots In The Northeast?
The Northeast area of the United States
(encompassing New England and the Middle Atlantic region) is
virtually swimming in slot machines. The U.S. has some of the most
puritanical and old-fashioned notions regarding gambling of anywhere
in the world, but this section of the country maintains a much more
liberal attitude towards extended gambling and slot terminals.
Perhaps even TOO liberal. Is the northeastern part of the country
saturated in slots? There are indications that it just might be.
Atlantic City, New Jersey, is in trouble. The troubled American
economy has hit the entire casino industry hard, and it’s not as if
Las Vegas has not seen its numbers drop. On the other hand, however,
Atlantic City has really been suffering. Most experts believe that
dramatically increased competition is what’s primarily to blame for
this effect. The number of tourists is way down, most likely because
many former Atlantic City visitors no longer have to leave their
home states to play the slots. The failure to attract a younger
generation of visitors has also been attributed to the decline of
this once-bustling destination.
That’s to say nothing about the fizzling of Maryland’s dreams of
economic recovery by way of slot machine gambling. The state has not
yet received enough acceptable bids to develop the five slot game
casinos that were approved by voters in November after Legislators
got them all excited about potential revenues. Slots in Pennsylvania
are also performing at a lower level than expected, and the only
possible explanation is over-saturation of the market.
