Slot Terms You Need
to Know: Volume 2
Bank: This is the place where one keeps their
fortune – and occasionally withdraws it all to fund a problem
gambling habit. In the parlance of Vegas-style casinos, this is a
row of slot machines all lined up. If the collection of slot names
were arranged in a circle or oval, it would be called a CAROUSEL.
Attendant: The “change person” at a land-based casino is the
employee charged with the task of trading players’ cash for coins or
tokens to be put in the slot machines.
Comps: Those free drinks they hand out in the casinos in Vegas are
just not intended to keep you from getting a parched throat – they
are a “comp,” or perk, designed to reward you for playing their
machines. The best comps, like gratis overnight stays at the hotel
and Cuban cigars, are generally reserved for high rollers playing
the tables.
Video Machines: Instead of spinning reels, these slot machines have
a single video screen that displays a random symbol or number. These
kinds of slot games were designed to circumvent state laws against
traditional slot machines in places like Minnesota, but have really
failed to gain much popularity. This sort of machine is still pretty
new, so there’s no telling what new developments might emerge to
make this niche of slot machine gambling more attractive to players
biased in favor of more traditional games.
Gum Vendor: Back in the day, these slots dispensed chewing gum
instead of coins. Gum vendors helped slot fans get their fix when
they lived in a place that had outlawed slot machines as a form of
cash gambling.
