Slot Terms You Need
to Know: Volume 13
Fruit Machine: If you happen to find yourself
taking a trip abroad, this is a good term to know. Brits refer to
slot machines as “fruit machines.” Undoubtedly, this dates back to
the earliest slot games, which featured pictures of fruit on the
reels. Did you know that the first “fruit machine” was designed by a
chewing gum manufacturer? These slots dispensed fruit-flavored gum
as the prize for lining up the appropriate symbols – cherry-flavored
for cherry, grape for grape, and so on. This prototype slot was also
the first to use the BAR symbol that has now become quintessential
in slit devices. It’s unlikely that you’ll get chewing gum as part
of your jackpot anymore… but with the hundreds of thousand of
dollars you could win, you can certainly afford to buy a few
packages to share with your friends!
Call Attendant: This person is your buddy when playing the slots at
a land-based casino. If you should be so lucky as to hit the
jackpot, expect this person to come make a HAND PAYOUT (or HARD
PAYOUT) of your winnings, should they exceed the capacity of the
machine, or if you are playing a coinless model. If there’s
something wrong with your machine or choice, this person will also
be the one to address the issue.
Liberal Slot: This is a slot machine that has decided to vote for
Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. (We crack ourselves
up!) Actually, it’s another term for a slot game that pays out
frequently and/or generously, like a LOOSE slot or a HOT device.
Regardless of your political affiliation, you will want to seek out
these games.
