Slot Terms You Need
to Know: Volume 1
Carousel: No, not the kind with the horses and
golden rings. A carousel is a grouping of slot machines, usually in
a round formation. You would find a carousel at a place with a lot
of slot games, like a casino.
EGM: This is an abbreviation for “electronic gaming machine,” also
known as a slot machine with all the modern-day bells and whistles.
Low Level Machine: Also known as a “slant top” machine. A slot
machine where you can take a seat and play the slot machine in
question, the opposite of which is an “upright” machine, where you
must stand up to play. Hardcore slots players on a hot steak are
likely to prefer the former!
Sound of Rain: This is something that makes gamblers with
convertibles wince, and wish that they had put the top up. Oh, and
it’s also a sweet, sweet sound indeed to slot machine players, made
when a large number of coins patters down into the tray, signaling a
win.
Optimal Play: In terms of skill-based slot games, “optimal play”
ensures the maximum-possible payout percentage. In other words, if a
gambler is perfectly skilled, they experience optimum play – and the
“optimum play” payout percentage, or likelihood of winning.
Candle: This is what players have to rely on when the lights go out.
It’s also the light on top of a slot machine that flashes when an
operator’s assistance is needed. Examples: a player needs change or
requests hand pay, or there’s something wrong with the slot machine.
