How Likely Is Your
Dream Jackpot?
Every slot machine player dreams of hitting the
jackpot. That common fantasy is what kept the reels of millions of
casino slot games spinning for the better part of a century before
the birth of the World Wide Web, and it’s the desire that fuels the
massive online slots and casino gambling industry today. Every week,
the news sections of slot machine sites just like this one feature
one or two stories about the latest international slots fan to win a
fortune. These lucky slobs, identified by first name and last
initial as if at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, played the odds at
games named things like Fruit Fiesta or Sir Winsalot and hit the
jackpot, scoring a life-changing amount of money (sometimes in the
millions) just by hitting a button on either a tangible slot machine
or clicking their mouse. These success stories make our own dreams
seem just a little bit closer – next time, it could be YOU, and not
Bob S. or Jane D. being congratulated… right?
You may want to hold your horses. Psychologists acknowledge that the
dream of hitting the jackpot is what keeps players spinning the
reels, but you can’t blind yourself to the reality that winning a
fortune at the slots is exceedingly rare. Like winning the lottery,
your odds of hearing the sound of millions of dollars raining down
on your lap after a spin of the quarter slot is a far shot, to say
the very least. The odds are not in your favor playing the slots,
although the owners and operators of slot machines will go to great
lengths to keep this very true fact as unobvious as possible!
