Is It Really Your
Lucky Day?
I’m an Aquarius. Today, I was flipping through the
newspaper, and happened to see my horoscope, hidden back behind the
funny page. What do you know: the stars tell me that “today is my
lucky day!” Does this make me more likely to win at the slot
machines, if I should drive down to my nearest land-based casino, or
if I fire up my computer to partake of the online slots? It sounds
ridiculous, but a recent letter to gambling expert John Robison
asked pretty much that same thing. Robison writes a syndicated
column that appears in several newspapers and on a select number of
Internet websites.
The reader asked Robison if he thought that careful examination of a
player’s horoscope could potentially help them determine the
winningest time to play the slots. Reader “Sail” explained to
Robison that s/he had seen horoscopes that specifically mentioned
that it might be a good day to play one’s luck. Not surprisingly,
Robison was not impressed by the notion that, if the moon was in the
third house and Venus was in perfect alignment with the Sun, one
would almost certainly be guaranteed of a jackpot on that precise
moment in time.
Look, we all have our pet superstitions. Some slot fans like to prop
pictures of their kids, their sweetheart, or their pet dog on the
pokey to hopefully bring them some better luck, but that certainly
doesn’t mean that the tactic will be successful! Feel free to
believe in whatever you’d like, but the fact remains that the theory
of a “lucky streak” simply does not hold up.
