Brrr… Is It Cold In
Here?
Why do our favorite slot machines suddenly and
stubbornly grow cold? It’s a question that has haunted fans of this
popular and familiar type of gambling for years. Maybe you’ve heard
good things about a particular fruit machine title, or had positive
luck with that game in the past. When you hit the button, however,
you can almost feel the reels turn to ice beneath your fingertips –
the game’s gone cold. In the parlance of slots fans, a “cold”
machine is one that is not paying out.
It can be hard to tell whether a chilly device is legitimately less
hospitable than some of its neighbors, or whether you are just
behind the statistical eight ball and experiencing a bad streak of
luck. Because a casino’s total payout percentage is calculated by
taking an average of all its slot machines, it is entirely possible
that there are some real losers in among warmer slot games. Of
course, even the most sizzling slot isn’t going to pop a jackpot on
every other turn of the reels, so you just don’t know. The moral of
this story is that there really is no way to tell whether your slot
machine of choice is truly “colder” than normal.
If you are experiencing a run of bad luck, most gambling experts
advise that you cut your losses and move on. Getting frustrated with
a particular slot game? Get up and choose another – odds are that
there are plenty! Of course, if another player sits down at the game
you just abandoned in frustration, you must not curse the heavens if
they roll a juicy jackpot on their first spin. That’s just how the
cookie crumbles, and that’s just how the slot machine spins!
