Underage Gambling
Report Released
It doesn’t take a degree to realize that underage
gambling is an economic and societal problem, but getting a
professor to prove that point couldn’t possibly hurt. The United
Kingdom’s Gambling Commission has finally released its long-awaited
study of underage slot machine and casino gambling this week, to
great interest domestically and abroad. The proliferation of online
slot and casino play sites on the World Wide Web has brought the
dangerously attractive world of gambling to children and young
adults in ways that are more accessible than other. The youngest
generation of Brits (and Americans!) is the most computer-literate
that the world has ever seen, and it seems that, no matter what
safeguards online casinos attempt to put in place, these savvy young
people will find ways around them. In fact, the parents of these
underage individuals will even help them get to the gambling sites,
in many cases!
Professor Gill Valentine was commissioned to determine exactly what
was the scope of underage gambling in the U.K. Valentine’s research
found that simple software fixes on the part of online slot machine
and casino gambling sites would never be sufficient to curb the
significant issues inherent in the problem. Education and new
programs on a national level were the professor’s suggestions for
how to best deal with the problems.
Valentine found that the issue is, indeed, serious. His research
confirmed that young people who gamble online at an early age have a
significantly-higher likelihood of developing a serious gambling
problem (like ddiction) later on in life.
