Mohegan Sun Delays
Expansion
Following news that the Foxwoods Casino Resort of
New Haven would be axing some seven hundred employees this month,
Connecticut’s other tribal-run gambling establishment announced that
they would be putting off the final steps of their almost one
billion dollar expansion, in an effort to save money. The Mohegan
Sun of Uncasville will not be opening their huge expansion two years
from now, as was formerly planned. The tribe has suspended the
building of their new, thirty-nine story hotel, House of Blues
restaurant and concert hall, spa, and retail/dining space. The total
budget for the project had been set at nine hundred twenty-five
million dollars, seven hundred thirty-four million of which as yet
to be shelled out by the Mohegan tribe.
Mitchell Etess tried to soothe the undoubtedly jangled nerves of
Mohegan Sun employees that the casino had no plans to conduct
layoffs en masse, in the way that the Foxwoods announced it would do
this week. The chief executive officer and president of the casino
stated that the Sun had gradually dispensed with between five
hundred and six hundred jobs through attrition throughout 2008, and
had no plans to cut anymore.
The Mohegan Sun’s slot machines have really taken a hit. Apparently,
the Sun’s slot game revenue has dipped by almost fifteen percent.
It’s been a particularly cruel summer for the Mohegan Sun; the
warmest months of 2007 saw record amounts of money being channeled
into the slot machines.
Foxwoods has seen a decrease of over three percent on its slot games
– a two million dollar difference.
