Ohio Casino Would
Boost Jobs, Revenue
The Lakes Entertainment group is hoping that
Ohioans vote in favor of allowing them to build a new slot machine
and casino gambling establishment when they go to the polls on
November 4th.
Those in favor of the new casino most frequently include new jobs as
a major benefit. The slot machines and other gambling devices in the
casino would bring in an estimated five thousand permanent jobs,
which is to say nothing of those state residents who would be
temporarily employed by the building of the new resort. The average
wage would be thirty-four thousand dollars, which is a respectable
sum by any means. It is believed that related tourism would bring
the total up to almost sixty-eight thousand positions.
The new casino would also generate about eight hundred million
dollars in annual revenue, with two hundred forty million of that
projected sum being pumped straight back into the Buckeye State
economy and divvied up amongst Ohio counties on the basis of
population after the casino paid its taxes.
Detractors of the slot machine palace say that the casino’s opening
would inevitably lead to more casinos in Ohio, as Indian tribes have
been looking to move on the state for years. Indian tribal casinos
are not required to pay taxes, and if that becomes the case, the
original casino could also have its tax bill eliminated. Foes of
gambling deny that the casino would ultimately be an economic boon,
since their position is that slot games and other forms of gambling
just pull money away from other areas of the economy.
