CT Casino Cuts Jobs
The bad state of the American economy is wreaking
havoc on casino gambling throughout the United States. This is amply
apparent at the Foxwoods Resort Casino of New Haven, Connecticut,
which is operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. It was
announced in a press release this past week that the Foxwoods would
be hacking seven hundred jobs, or a full six percent of its total
employee base. The tragic news comes a scant four months after the
popular casino opened the doors on a huge expansion.
The Foxwoods has, like many other land casinos throughout the
country, been struggling to stay afloat amidst the tidal waves of
the troubled American economy. The casino’s management made the
difficult decision to cut two hundred jobs earlier in the summer.
Now, a large number of the establishment’s eleven thousand workers
(many of them members of the Pequot tribe) are fearing for their
livelihoods. The cuts are expected to be made in waves over the
“next few weeks,” and are expected to affect both management and
staff positions at all levels. The Pequot have announced that each
staff member laid off will receive two weeks’ severance and benefits
for every year of employment, up to twenty-six weeks.
The tribal council chairman admitted that the Foxwoods management
has been trying hard to cope with the economic recession, but can no
longer ignore the major decline in revenue. Michael Thomas said that
the tribe had to trim down its expenses to ensure the “health and
vibrancy” of tribal finances in the long run.
