Voters Say No To
Slots in Guam
Guam voters are very clear on this for the second
time – they don’t want slots on the island. With a very small voter
turnout, only roughly 44% showed up, more than 60% of them said they
were opposed to legalizing slots in the country. So where does this
leave the racetrack?
It is likely that Guam Greyhound will attempt again to get the
voters to approve slots for them, however, if they want to they have
to start from scratch to get the initiative on the ballot again. It
isn’t as if they can just keep trying, they have to go through the
whole process each and every time they attempt to get slots
legalized.
Guam’s voters said no once before to the slots, they told the track
in November of 2006 that they weren’t having any of it, and now they
have spoken again. Current results of the slots proposition showed
that 13,259 voted against the slots with only 7,774 voting for it.
For the slots proposal to get on the ballot again, they will have to
gather another 5,000 signatures of registered voters to get it back
on the ballot. If you assume that everyone who signed it the first
time voted for it, then they have not reached the majority of the
population with their attempts to get the slots approved.
If they choose to try again, they can attempt to get on the ballot
for November. It is not known if they will try again for the slots,
but if they do, be assured that the opposition will be ready and
waiting for them once again.
