Slots Live to See Another Day

Governor Ted Strickland and Attorney General Marc Dann got shut down yesterday in their attempt to shut down the slots of Ohio. A Franklin County judge ruled that the state could not take any further action against the slots in Ohio due to the financial condition of those that operate and own the slots. Franklin County Common Please Judge Guy L. Reece ruled that the state had to wait before taking any further action against the slots that are known as the Tic Tac Fruit slots.

The ruling only applies to that specific slots brand of machine; the other gambling machines are basically on their own. The judge said that the owners of those slots could be “irreparably harmed financially” if they were to lose their slots without a proper hearing. Those operators of other slots will still be subject to lawsuits from Dann if they do not comply with the cease and desist orders that went out.

For now, there are a little more than 3,600 slots that will be permitted to run in the state while all of the others have three days to get rid of their slots. Those that do not comply will be sued. Many of those that have already received their letters have gotten rid of their slots, while others are continuing to operate unbeknownst to the state. More than 700 slots businesses have been informed of the legal change – but again, that does not include those that the state does not know about yet.

R. William Meeks is a lawyer for the Tic Tac Fruit distributor Ohio Skill Games, and he says that their slots games are games of skill, not chance, and are therefore legal. Meeks says that they have complied with the law, and thereby cannot be asked to close down their business. The state disagrees, they say that these types of businesses are simply cloning slots and making them look like games of skill when in reality they are not.
