Detroit Slots
Revenue Increases
Detroit’s casinos have increased their slots
revenue over the same time last year, according to the Michigan
Gaming Control Board. They say that their slots performed better
than they did previously, which ended in a lower amount of slots
revenue for the month of July last year. This year, their slots
numbers were higher.
The Board said that Motor City, MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown were
up 4.94%, 2.19%, and 1.12% respectively. Some say it has to do with
new construction, some say it has to do with errors in accounting,
that perhaps last year’s slots numbers were higher than they were
this year.
The idea that perhaps slots revenues were not reported correctly
comes from the fact that Greektown was currently in hot water over
that very thing. The casino had improperly counted coins for their
slots during 2004 and 2005 spot checks on the casino. The board and
the casino came to an amount of $20,000 that the casino would have
to pay as a fine.
The board says that once a year they are required to count the coins
that are in the hoppers of the slots that are on the casino floor.
Greektown did not follow procedures in the processing of the slots
revenue, and thus ended up paying the fine. They won’t have to worry
about a fine later on as all of their slots are now ticket in/ticket
out technology. As the casino are looking at more violations, per
the board, the settlement was handled quickly.
